A certified assistance dog is not legally considered a pet, but rather a medical or participatory aid. Just as you wouldn’t ask a person in a wheelchair or with crutches to leave their aid at the door, it would be equally inappropriate to do so with a certified assistance dog.
Assistance dogs are to be regarded as an “animal aid” because of their extensive training and the services they provide.
Assistance dogs are not ordinary household pets, so a general ban on dogs does not apply to them. If you were to deny entry to the dog, you would effectively be denying access to the person who depends on the assistance dog , and that would be unfair discrimination.
If your house rules prohibit dogs, misunderstandings can be avoided by adding an exception: “except assistance dogs.”
